We are proud to present...our Queen, as she is known around the farm! Our little piece of Poland! Both her sire and dam were imported from Poland. Possessed of a regal bearing, unequaled majesty and class, Donica is everything you would expect from her Pure Polish lineage. Beautiful, elegant and powerful, yet as kind as they come. Her movement and intelligent trainability make her my favorite riding horse, closely followed by her daughter Divine Infidel. She appears to float across the ground, like an angel that has fallen out of heaven!

The Polish Arabian horse is renowned for its quiet disposition, incredible athleticism, beauty, quality and strength. We have capitalized on these traits by including this fabulous strain in our program. Donica is a sweetheart, but a tiger of a mount! Of all the horses here, if I had to go into battle on a war mare, I would choose Donica. Her courage and willingness, generosity and agility make her the obvious choice.

The Polish Arabian is unique, having been bred in an endemic situation; the Polish breeders had different views and goals than the Egyptian breeders, the Russian breeders, or those in any other country. Polish Arabians have been selectively bred to be fertile, long lives, easy breeding horses, as well as being athletic, elegant and sound. Some characteristics generally found in Polish Arabians include a well-shaped neck and throatlatch, dryness of bone, quality of skin, silkiness of coat and beautiful liquid eyes. Other than importations by General Dickinson and Henry Babson in the 1930s, Americans did not acquire Arabians from Poland until the late fifties and early sixties. Most Polish Arabians in the United States have either been purchased at the annual Polish Prestige sale, an auction held after the Polish National Horse Show each year, or are descended from stock bought at those sales. The auction takes place at Janow Podlaski Stud Farm (where Donica's sire and dam were both born, incidentally) which is in the eastern part of the country over the border of the former Soviet Union.

Donica possesses the characteristic type, quality, harmonious build and tank-like body for which Probat daughters are revered. Probat, bred in Sweden of pure Polish lines, has influenced the Polish breeding program as the chief progenitor of the blood of Comet, his illustrious grandsire who has been distinguished as "the best stallion used in Poland after World War II." Probat is best known for producing phenomenal daughters, of special value to the Poles. Probat is also credited with producing six Polish National Champions and seven Reserves; the 1990 show gave Probat his greatest sire recognition with two National Champions and a Reserve. In racing statistics compiled in 1998, in a 15 year study of sires of Polish race winners, Probat headed up the list with ten percent of the wins. Probat came to the united states in 1987 and stayed at Lasma before moving to Meadowwood Farms, who purchased him for 3.5 million dollars. His American foal total included nine National winners who have four National Championships. He was an extraordinary horse, and one of the all time greats. George Altenberg of Sherwood Forest farms, who owned Probat at the end of his life, said of him: "I never realized a stallion could be so beautiful, particularly in the head and neck, and so gentle at the same time. The sweetest horse I have ever known. Actually, Probat had a wonderful life. Everywhere he was in the world, from the time he was foaled, he was loved." (Arabian Horse World, Probat obituary, Jan. '03) I was lucky enough to have met Probat at Meadowwood Farm, and must say that I loved him, too!

I also met Donica's dam Donna on that same trip to Meadowwood. Richard Patterson, breeder of Monogramm, wrote: "In Poland know this: If the Poles had a fantastic and typey stallion out of a mare with an insignificant dam line, they would not use him. Instead, they would select breeding stallions out of a fantastic mare. The key to Polish breeding is the value they put on the mare lines." This is what sets Donica apart!
